In 1914, half of the exports of coal from Newcastle upon Tyne went to the Baltic ports of Germany. In the August of 1914, colliers left the port with coal - only to be turned around by their own navy because Germany was being blockaded.
You can imagine what that did to the local economy. And, just a now, the British government didn't care a whit.
The establishment thought that Germany, really Prussia and its dependent states, was about to challenge Britain. We had an Entente Cordial with the France, which hated the Germans because of the defeat in 1870 and the Siege of Paris in 1871. The Liberal Government decided that we had to prevent the Germans defeating the French once again and decided to enter the war. When our troops arrived the French were days away from defeat. Every life lost after we prevented that defeat was a life that would have survived if we had decided not to declare war.

It could easily be cured by a law which required any publication to justify any statement made regarding any subject which affected public opinion or sought to influence action (such as voting).
