Well said. Here in the United States, "peace" as a concept has virtually disappeared. No politician speaks of peace for us. There is no JFK giving his brilliant peace speech at American University in 1963. It's war or preparations for war, world without end, Amen, where troops are now "warriors" and "warfighters," where sporting events are kicked off with military flyovers and where coaches and players wear military camouflage, where presidents boast of trillion-dollar war budgets, and where genocidal nuclear weapons are now sold as "investments."
Orwell was supposed to be a warning, not a user's guide.
"U.S. Attorney General John Ashcroft warned Congress in 2001 that new terrorist acts were imminent and that lawmakers would “be to blame” if they failed immediately to grant broader powers".
And, of course, the failure of any terrorist attack to take place demonstrated the necessity and the effectiveness of the broader powers. Whereas if any attack had taken place, that would have shown the need for broader powers yet.

I loved your comment 'Orwell was supposed to be a warning, not a user's guide'
